Senior Photos at The LAB Anti-Mall in Costa Mesa

For Seniors Who Beat to Their Own Drum

Not every senior wants soft fields or beach sunsets. While those locations are beautiful, they don’t always reflect every personality. Some seniors want edge. Others want texture, contrast, and something that truly feels like them.

If you’re creative, independent, and drawn to doing things differently, The LAB Anti-Mall in Costa Mesa might be the perfect setting for your senior photos.

What Is The LAB Anti-Mall?

The LAB (Little American Business) Anti-Mall is one of the most unique photo locations in Orange County. Unlike traditional outdoor spots, it isn’t polished or predictable — and that’s exactly what makes it special.

Here, concrete walls meet greenery, and metal staircases sit beside textured brick. In addition, modern storefronts blend seamlessly with raw architectural elements. Because of this contrast, the entire space feels artistic, layered, and full of character.

Ultimately, The LAB feels creative and slightly rebellious — in the best way possible.

Senior Photos for the Creative + Independent

This location is especially ideal for seniors who:

  • Love art, music, or design

  • Have a strong personal style

  • Prefer urban over coastal

  • Want something different from everyone else

  • Aren’t afraid to stand out

Instead of feeling staged, The LAB offers natural variety at every turn. For example, one corner might feature bold graphic murals, while another offers minimalist concrete walls with soft directional light. Meanwhile, hidden alleyways create moody, editorial backdrops that add depth and drama.

As a result, your photos feel intentional rather than trendy.

Why The Textures Matter

One of the biggest reasons seniors love this Costa Mesa location is the texture. Because the setting combines raw concrete, industrial metal, graphic artwork, organic greenery, exposed brick, and clean white walls, every image gains visual dimension.

In other words, you get edge and softness in the same frame.

While the environment feels urban, it still photographs warmly and naturally. Therefore, your senior portraits stand out without looking harsh or overstyled.

Why Seniors Choose The LAB

Many seniors say the same thing when they inquire about this location:

“I just want something different.”

And that’s exactly what The LAB delivers.

Rather than forcing you into a traditional senior portrait style, this space allows you to express who you are right now — creative, bold, and evolving. For seniors heading into art school, music programs, fashion, entrepreneurship, or other creative paths, this environment often feels aligned with where they’re going.

It’s confident without being flashy.
It’s artistic without trying too hard.

Permit Information (We’ll Walk You Through It)

Because The LAB Anti-Mall is private property, a photography permit is required for professional senior sessions. In addition, there is a permit fee, and approval must be arranged in advance.

However, we handle the process with you step-by-step.

We will:

  • Guide you through the permit application

  • Confirm approved time slots

  • Communicate with property management if needed

  • Ensure all location guidelines are followed

As a result, your experience stays simple and stress-free. That way, you can focus on enjoying your session instead of worrying about logistics.

Wardrobe Guide for The LAB Anti-Mall

Because this location is bold and textured, your wardrobe should feel confident and intentional. Overall, think urban, artistic, and slightly editorial.

Style Direction

  • Monochromatic or bold accent colors

  • Layered and textured pieces

  • Structured silhouettes

  • Clean lines

On the other hand, this is not the place for overly preppy outfits or heavy floral prints unless styled with edge.

Outfit Ideas for Senior Girls

For girls who want a strong, modern look, a monochromatic outfit works beautifully. For example, black wide-leg trousers paired with a fitted tank and oversized blazer create instant confidence. Meanwhile, chunky boots or sleek sneakers add personality.

If you prefer something softer, try layering a slip dress with a leather or denim jacket. This contrast works especially well against concrete backdrops.

Additionally, high-waisted jeans with a fitted tee and oversized knit cardigan create a relaxed yet intentional vibe.

Outfit Ideas for Senior Boys

For boys, clean streetwear photographs incredibly well at The LAB. Slim black jeans paired with a neutral tee and overshirt feel effortless yet styled.

Alternatively, tailored trousers with a fitted knit sweater elevate the look while still keeping it natural. Because the architecture adds structure, simple outfits often work best.

For a more creative edge, consider a monochrome outfit in black, cream, or olive. Layering textures like denim, cotton, and suede adds dimension without overwhelming the frame.

Colors That Photograph Best

Because of the industrial setting, certain tones stand out beautifully.

  • Black

  • Charcoal

  • Cream

  • Oatmeal

  • Taupe

  • Olive

  • Rust

  • Deep navy

  • Chocolate brown

Meanwhile, it’s best to avoid neon colors, busy patterns, large logos, or overly athletic styles.

Add Personality

If you want to make your session even more personal, consider bringing something that represents you. For example, a skateboard, headphones, vintage camera, guitar, art portfolio, or statement accessories can elevate your images naturally.

Not only does this add depth to your portraits, but it also tells a story about who you are in this season of life.

A Senior Session That Feels Like You

At Blue Skys Studio, we believe senior photos should never feel one-size-fits-all. Instead, your session should reflect your personality, style, and direction.

Because The LAB Anti-Mall in Costa Mesa offers creative freedom and architectural texture, it allows us to create something original and elevated. We combine natural movement with light editorial direction so your personality leads the session.

If you beat to your own drum — and value creativity over conformity — this might be your place.

And we would love to create something bold and unforgettable with you ther

Look Sharp in 2025: The Best Style Guide for Men’s Headshots

Your headshot should work as hard as you do—and our men’s headshot style guide is here to help you show up with confidence. Whether you’re updating your professional profile, preparing for a new role, or simply want to look your best, your headshot is often the first impression you make. At Blue Sky’s Studio, we specialize in high-quality headshots for men in Manhattan who want to look sharp, professional, and camera-ready. In this headshot style guide, we’re sharing simple, effective wardrobe tips to help you put your best face forward.

Top Tips from Our Mens Headshot Style Guide

How to dress for a men’s headshot? At Blue Sky’s Studio, we consistently see that timeless, classic styles always make the best impression. Think solid, dark-toned colors like navy blue, charcoal grey, and deep burgundy—these hues communicate confidence and authority while ensuring the focus stays on you, not your outfit.

In our men’s headshot style guide, we recommend a tailored blazer or suit jacket over a crisp dress shirt is an excellent choice for any professional setting. Whether you’re going for a modern C-suite look or aiming to refresh your LinkedIn presence, simple, fitted clothing provides a sharp, upscale feel that works beautifully against both light and dark studio backgrounds.

Pro Tip: Skip loud patterns or flashy branding—they can be distracting and may not photograph well.

Show Your Personality Through Subtle Accessories

Our men’s headshot style guide, suggest accessories to bring a bit of your personality to a professional image. Consider:

  • A classic watch

  • A tasteful tie with a subtle pattern

  • A pocket square that adds a pop of color

These touches enhance your image without stealing the spotlight. Just remember—less is more. Avoid oversized or flashy pieces that can overpower the photo.

Grooming Is Non-Negotiable

Your appearance should reflect attention to detail. Schedule a haircut 2–4 days before your session, giving your style time to settle naturally. A freshly shaved or well-groomed beard is essential.

Also, don’t forget the finishing touches:

  • Trimmed eyebrows

  • Moisturized skin

  • Clean, well-maintained nails (they sometimes sneak into frame!)

A polished look communicates professionalism before you say a word.

Tailored Clothing Makes the Difference

One of the most overlooked aspects of headshot preparation? Fit. Ill-fitting clothing can distort your shape, making even the most expensive wardrobe look sloppy. Invest in tailoring if needed—especially in the shoulders and collar area, which are prominent in close-up shots.

Remember: A proper fit doesn’t just look good; it makes you feel more confident—and that shows on camera.

Match Your Outfit to the Studio Background

Our Manhattan photography studio offers a range of backdrop options, from clean whites to dramatic charcoal greys. We recommend discussing the background with us ahead of time to ensure your wardrobe enhances (rather than competes with) the setting.

Darker suits contrast well with lighter backgrounds, while mid-tone clothing works perfectly with deeper backdrops. Skin tone also plays a role, and we’re happy to help you choose the best combination for a polished result.

Practice Makes Powerful Posing

A strong headshot is about more than clothes—it’s about presence. Practice smiling naturally and experimenting with subtle expressions in front of a mirror. Know your best angles and bring that self-awareness into your session.

We’ll guide you during the shoot, but coming in prepared helps you relax, and that comfort translates into confident, authentic images.

Final Thoughts from Your Men’s Headshot Style Guide & Photographer in Manhattan

At Blue Sky’s Studio, we understand how much your headshot matters. It’s often the first thing people see on your website, LinkedIn, or professional materials. That’s why we go beyond the lens—helping you craft a look that’s both stylish and strategic.

By choosing classic attire, minding the fit, grooming thoughtfully, and expressing personality with restraint, you’re setting the stage for a standout image that speaks volumes about your personal brand. Using this men’s headshot style guide as your checklist will help you walk into your session prepared and confident.

Happy 2018!

Blue Sky’s is now open for the New Year and ready to start photographing again! I love new beginnings. Yes, I am one of those annoying people that actually spends the first few weeks of the year, reflecting back on the previous year and looking at a few key things! That is one of the reasons I always commit to taking 2 weeks off during the holidays.

Here are some of the questions I ask myself:
  • What went right in 2017?
  • How can I improve in 2018?
  • What are my business goals for 2018?
  • What are my personal goals for 2018?
  • What are my family goals for 2018?
  • What are my spiritual goals for 2018?
As the saying goes, “A goal without a plan is just a wish.”
That is why it is so important for me, after the very busy holiday season, to take a few weeks off and unwind and spend time with my family. This frees up my mind to start thinking creatively again and start dreaming of the next big thing for myself and my business. I feel grateful that this holiday season I got to spend 10 days with my son Cameron (he only got a short break for the holidays and then back to LSU to train), spent time with my in-laws and enjoyed some much needed one on one time with both my husband, Bob and my daughter, Kasey.
I am so grateful for all the things that went well in 2017 with Blue Sky’s Studio. We had an amazing year and launched our brand new reveal sessions (if you haven’t had a chance to experience the reveal of our favorite images from your session, you are in for a real treat the next time you do a session with Blue Sky’s). We photographed so many new families, high school seniors and corporate headshots. Thanks to Bob, we got an amazing studio makeover complete with a beautiful hair and makeup station. We were involved in numerous charity events and were able to contribute in so many meaningful ways.

Personally, I enjoyed helping Cameron move into his new apartment in Baton Rouge and helping him start his college career at LSU.  I proudly saw my daughter Kasey achieve her goal of getting excepted to Columbia University.  I had several amazing trips with my husband, including a fantastic trip to Florida for a much need week of rest and relaxation and a first time trip to New Orleans which lived up to all of my expectations.

I was inspired by so many amazing teachers in 2017 including the incredible Sue Bryce (Canon explorer of light and all around amazing photographer and educator).  I felt so lucky to get an opportunity to go to Palm Desert and participate in the Portrait Master’s workshop.  I was also able to listen to some really amazing business books.

Here is a list of just a few of my favorite books from 2017:

Hacking Growth, by Sean Ellis (proudly, he is my brother) and Morgan Brown

Disrupt You! by Jay Samit

The 10X Rule by Grand Cardone

Eat That Frog by Brian Tracy

Unshakable by Tony Robbins

Building a StoryBrand by Donald Miller

10% Happier by Dan Harris

The Talent Code by Daniel Coyle

The Power of Habit by Charles Duhigg

I Can’t Make This Up by Kevin Hart **** my favorite this year

The 5 Second Rule by Mel Robbins

Duct Tape Marketing by John Jantsch

The 12 Week Year: by Brian Moran and Michael Lennington

Grit The Power of Passion and Perseverance by Angela Duckworth

The Tao of Pooh by Benjamin Hoff (a reread cause I love this book)

#Girlboss by Sofia Amoruso

Purple cow: Transform your Business by Being Remarkable by Seth Godin

Presence: Bringing Your Boldest Self to Your Biggest Challenges by Amy Cuddy

Living Forward by Daniel Harkavy and Michael Hyatt

To name just a few….. LOL  My key to all of these business books is to listen while I am on my walk or walking the dog.  I feel like I am a more active listener when I am moving.

For 2018 I have decided I will have a word for the year.  My word is Intuition.   I feel like I have great intuition, but I don’t always listen to it.  Usually my inner conversation goes something like this, “I know I should really do this but, I don’t want to hurt someones feelings, or someone might misunderstand, or I can do it later”… etc, etc.  You know, those crazy conversations you have in your head.  This year I am committed to listening to those intuitions and acting on them with love and kindness.

Over the last few years, as many of you know, I have been committed to The Miracle Morning, by Hal Elrod.  Basically for me, it is getting up early, starting the day with a morning medication, followed by a list of everything I am grateful for in my life, a prayer to start the day and ask for God’s blessing and a visualization of my future goals.  For me, this has been life changing.  I am happier, more relaxed, less worried, and generally just a better person.

My hopes and prayers for all of you for 2018 is that you reach for your dreams, enjoy your friends and family and that you are loved and cherished.  Have a wonderful year and I hope to see you soon.  Here are a few images from my family photography session.  Thank you abundantly to Kathryn LeBoye for taking the images that include me and my family.  The gift of photography is priceless to me and I will cherish these images forever!

Hugs,

Kristin
