We started here with a soft blue floral sundress and combat boots, a mix of feminine and edgy that’s so popular with my seniors right now. The neutral, textured backdrop keeps all the attention on her.

The Courtyard, Koi Pond & Arched Corridors

Around the central garden, the reflecting pond and long arched arcade give a completely different mood — bright, open, and a little bit glamorous. She switched into a crisp white top and jeans with sleek boots, and we used the fountain’s edge and the shimmering water as our stage. This is where “historic” meets “fashion editorial.”

The Bells & Brick Archway

You can’t photograph this mission without its icons — the famous bell wall and the rose-topped brick archway. We layered a light denim jacket over her floral dress, added a wide-brim hat, and let her walk right through the arch. These are the frames that instantly say San Juan Capistrano.

The Garden Benches & Bougainvillea

The Mission’s carved stone benches, tucked among roses, camellias, and cascading red bougainvillea, are pure romance. We slowed down here for some of my favorite portraits of the day — soft, dreamy, and full of color.

Some of the most unexpected, fun frames came from the desert-style plantings and fruit trees around the grounds — towering cactus, a shady wooden porch, and a lemon-laden citrus tree that felt like something out of a magazine. She twirled through in the black floral dress and hat, and these ended up being some of the most joyful images of the whole day.

Timing is everything. The light is softest in the first hour after opening or the last hour before close, and the grounds are quieter then, too.

Come styled and ready. Hair and makeup done, outfits pressed and on hangers. We’ll talk through your looks well before the day so nothing feels rushed.
