1. Choose the Perfect Location

Where you take your senior portraits will set the tone for your entire session.

  • Laguna Beach Senior Portraits: If you love the ocean breeze, golden sunsets, and natural beauty, a beach session is perfect. Laguna Beach offers stunning cliffs, tide pools, and soft sandy beaches that create a dreamy, timeless look.
  • Urban-Themed High School Senior Portraits: Want something more modern and edgy? Opt for a city-inspired backdrop with cool architecture, colorful murals, and industrial vibes. Downtown areas in Orange County provide endless creative possibilities.
  • Nature & Open Spaces: Prefer a softer, more natural look? Parks, trails, and fields can add a rustic and relaxed feel to your senior session.

2. Plan Your Outfits

Your wardrobe plays a huge role in how your photos turn out. Here’s what to consider:

  • Pick Outfits that Reflect Your Style: Whether it’s a trendy outfit, a classic dress, or casual jeans and a t-shirt, make sure you feel comfortable and confident.
  • Avoid Distracting Patterns: Stick to solid colors or subtle patterns to keep the focus on you.
  • Layering Adds Dimension: Jackets, sweaters, and accessories like hats can elevate your look and create variety in your shots.
  • Consider the Location: Flowy dresses work beautifully for beach sessions, while denim and sneakers fit well in an urban setting.

3. Schedule Your Session at the Right Time

Lighting is everything in photography. To get the best results:

  • Golden Hour (Sunrise or Sunset): This is the most flattering time of day, offering soft, glowing light. Perfect for beach and outdoor sessions.
  • Mid-Morning: If you prefer bright and airy photos, this can work well—especially in shaded locations.
  • Avoid Harsh Midday Sun: It can create strong shadows and squinting, which isn’t ideal for portraits.

4. Hair, Makeup & Grooming Tips

A little preparation goes a long way when it comes to looking polished in photos.

  • For Girls: Natural makeup enhances your features while still looking like you. Consider professional hair and makeup for a polished look.
  • For Guys: A fresh haircut a week before your shoot keeps things sharp but natural. Avoid last-minute cuts that look too fresh.
  • Skincare: Stay hydrated and moisturize for a healthy, glowing complexion.

5. Bring Props & Accessories (If You Want)

Props can add personality to your session. Consider bringing:

  • A letterman jacket, sports gear, or musical instrument that represents your passions.
  • Sunglasses, a hat, or trendy sneakers to add flair.
  • A graduation cap for a fun sneak peek at your upcoming milestone.

🎓 FAQ: How to Prepare for Your Senior Photo Session

1. What should I wear for senior pictures?

Choose outfits that reflect your personality but won’t go out of style. Popular tips:

  • Stick to solid colors or simple patterns—avoid loud prints or logos.

  • Bring 2–3 outfit options (casual, dressy, and school-spirited).

  • Coordinate but don’t match for group shots.

  • Consider colors that complement your skin tone and the photo location.

2. How do I get ready the day before my senior session?

  • Get a good night’s sleep—no under-eye bags!

  • Stay hydrated for glowing skin.

  • Avoid new skincare products that might cause breakouts.

  • Iron your outfits and pack a bag with accessories, shoes, makeup, and a mirror.

3. What should I bring to my senior photo session?

Bring:

  • Multiple outfits (in garment bags or on hangers)

  • Accessories (hats, jewelry, jackets)

  • Touch-up items (lip gloss, powder, brush, hairspray)

  • Water and a towel for summer sessions

  • Props that show your personality (sports gear, instruments, books)

4. What’s the best time of day for senior pictures?

Golden hour (about an hour after sunrise or before sunset) gives you soft, flattering light. Midday sun can cause harsh shadows unless you’re shooting in the shade or indoors.

5. Can I do my own hair and makeup for senior pictures?

Yes, but many choose to book professional hair and makeup to look polished and camera-ready. If doing it yourself:

  • Keep it natural and close to your everyday look.

  • Avoid glitter or heavy contouring.

  • Use setting spray so it lasts through outfit changes and heat.

6. What if I feel awkward in front of the camera?

You’re not alone! A good photographer will help guide you with poses and prompts. Practice smiling and different poses in a mirror. Bring a friend or parent for moral support—and to hype you up!

7. How long does a senior photo session usually take?

Most sessions last between 1 to 2 hours, depending on how many outfits or locations you’re using. Mini sessions may be 30 minutes.

8. Where should I take my senior pictures?

Great locations include:

  • Parks and gardens

  • Urban or downtown areas

  • Beaches, lakes, or open fields

  • Your high school stadium or campus

  • Anywhere that reflects your hobbies or story

9. Should I bring props to my senior session?

Yes! Props can personalize your session. Think:

  • Sports equipment

  • College swag

  • Musical instruments

  • Books or art supplies

  • Cap and gown for graduation season

10. When should I schedule my senior photo session?

Book your session 3–6 months before your yearbook deadline. Summer and early fall are ideal for outdoor shoots with better weather and more flexible schedules.

Orange County High School Seniors often want to book their session in a field or at a cool city background.  Since Orange County beaches are in our backyard, it doesn’t seem as special of a location for a session.  But graduates from out of state dream of having their session at one of our spectacular beach locations.  Whether they book at Table Rock Beach, The Montage Resort Beach or Picnic beach, the background never disappoints.

Isabella’s Mom booked a last minute beach session while visiting Laguna Beach.  She grew up in Orange County and then moved across the country to New York.  This session was so special because most of their family vacations are spent in Laguna Beach or Newport Beach.  I love that Isabella wanted to keep it really natural and organic.  Here are some of my favorites from her session.
