The Golden Rules of What to Wear for Senior Pictures

A few simple guidelines make everything easier:

Bring three to four looks

Three to four outfits is the sweet spot for a 1–2 hour session. It gives us variety without feeling rushed. I usually suggest a mix: one casual-but-cute look, one dressed-up look, and one or two that show your personality (a favorite jacket, a dress you feel amazing in, your go-to jeans).

Dress for your location

Where we shoot shapes what works. Flowy dresses and soft neutrals look dreamy against the coast; structured pieces and bolder colors pop against urban textures. More on location-by-location looks below.

Choose colors that flatter and photograph well

Soft, earthy, and jewel tones are my favorites because they photograph beautifully and keep the attention on you. Rich greens, warm rusts, creams, denim, and deep blues all work gorgeously in Orange County light. Tiny, busy patterns and bright neons can distract (and neon actually casts colored light onto your skin), so use them sparingly.

Mind the details

Shoes, jewelry, and nails all show up in portraits, so bring options. A great pair of booties, clean sneakers, or strappy sandals can change the whole vibe of a look. Keep accessories meaningful but not overwhelming, and get a manicure a day or two before if you want polished hands in your close-ups.

What to Wear by Location

One of the best things about shooting senior pictures in Orange County is the sheer variety of backdrops, and each one calls for a slightly different wardrobe.

Coastal and beach sessions (Laguna Beach, Newport Beach, Dana Point). Think soft, movement-friendly fabrics: a flowy dress, a chunky knit over denim, neutral and sandy tones that echo the shoreline. Golden-hour light at the beach is magic, and relaxed textures look incredible in it. You can see the feel I’m going for on my beach senior portrait page.

Studio sessions. Our natural-light studio is perfect for clean, editorial looks. Solid colors, a sharp blazer, a beautiful dress, or a fashion-forward outfit all shine against a simple backdrop with no scenery to compete.

Organic sessions (parks, gardens, and open fields). This is where soft and romantic wins: pastels, florals, flowy silhouettes, and earthy neutrals that blend with the greenery and tall grass.

Urban sessions (downtown walls, alleys, and city texture). Go a little edgier here: structured jackets, bolder colors, a cool pair of boots, or a monochrome look that stands out against brick and graffiti. If this is your vibe, you’ll love these urban senior portrait locations.

What Should Guys Wear for Senior Pictures?

Senior guys, this section is for you, because you deserve great portraits too. The good news: your plan is simple. Bring two to three looks, like a casual tee or henley with your favorite jeans, a button-down or polo for something a step up, and maybe a jacket or layer that feels like you. Fitted (not tight, not baggy) always photographs best. Add in anything that tells your story, whether that’s a letterman jacket, your sport, your instrument, or a hat you never take off.

A short “skip list” that saves a lot of regret:

  • Logos and large graphics that date the photo and pull focus
  • Anything that doesn’t fit well right now (we photograph the fit you wear, not the one you’re hoping for)
  • Brand-new shoes you haven’t broken in
  • Tiny, busy patterns that shimmer or “buzz” on camera
  • All-white or all-black head to toe, which can wash out or flatten in bright light

How to Prep the Week Before

Your outfits will look even better with a little runway. Try everything on ahead of time (including shoes and accessories) so there are no surprises. Steam or iron anything wrinkled, since wrinkles are tough to fix later. Hydrate your skin, get a good night’s sleep, and if you’re adding professional hair and makeup, come with freshly washed, dry hair unless your artist says otherwise. Then pack each outfit together as a complete look, shoes and all, so we can move quickly on session day.
