Every year, the Eifrig family and I meet up for their family session, and every year I look forward to it like a little reunion. They are one of those families I have been lucky enough to photograph again and again, watching the kids grow from little ones into confident teenagers. Just steps from the Mission is the Los Rios Historic District, the oldest residential neighborhood in California, and home to a set of bright red vintage train cars near the Capistrano depot. We always try to sneak in a few frames here, because the bold red against the deep navy of the engine is such a fun, unexpected contrast to the soft Mission gardens.

The teens had a blast climbing aboard for some editorial-style portraits — one of my favorite shots of the whole session is the two of them laughing together in the doorway of the caboose. It is a reminder that family photos do not have to feel stiff or overly posed. Some of the best images happen when everyone is just enjoying the moment.
